Whites Smoke Pot, But Blacks Are Arrested

According to a study by a Queens College sociology professor, whites in New York are far less likely than blacks to be arrested on marijuana charges. Even though surveys show they are part of the demographic group that makes the heaviest use of pot, white people in New York are the least likely to be arrested for it.

Support For Legalizing Marijuana Gaining Ground Rapidly

The shift is widely described as generational. A Gallup poll in October found 44% of Americans favor full legalization of marijuana — a rise of 13 points since 2000. Gallup said that if public support continues growing at a rate of 1 to 2% per year, “the majority of Americans could favor legalization of the drug in as little as four years.”
